The vision and the voice
The view from devil’s tower
The snake with tail on tongue

So I’m packing, and iTunes is on random, and I’m talking to a girl whose eyes look into your soul. And this song called Magick by the Klaxons comes on- see the lyrics above for a taste- and suddenly I know something. I don’t know why I know it, she’s never told me, but it’s there and I know it. It seems weird just to say it as a fact, so I ask her, “Were you ever into Wicca?”

“I was.”

I think I’m getting better at listening to the world.

First: I don’t know about you, but I’ve been having some issues with the loading time for this page. This is due to the ad server (ads.evasivelabs.net- Baywords has ads, not my doing) being slow as a sloth in molasses. An easy solution is to convince your computer to check itself for the ads instead of checking ads.evasivelabs.net. It doesn’t find them, and the rest of the web page loads much more speedily. Here’s how to do it on a Mac or Linux box:

Open Terminal. For Macs, this is in /Application/Utilities.

Type “sudo nano /etc/hosts” without the quotes. This command tells your computer to open the text file /etc/hosts in a text editor (nano) as the super user (sudo- “super user do”).

Enter your password when it’s asked for. You won’t see dots or anything. Just type it and hit enter. If you typed it correctly, you should see a file that looks something like this (the last two lines excluded):

Add the line “127.0.0.1 ads.evasivelabs.net” (without quotes) to your hosts file. Hit “Ctrl-x”, then “y”, then “Enter”. You should now be looking at the original Terminal screen. Restart your web browser, and voila, this site will load much faster.

On another note, I have given away a lot of my possessions this semester as I work toward a more mobile life. My eventual goal is to be able to follow any “dancing lessons from God” that come my way. Today the victims were my iPod (in anticipation of my purchase of an iPhone in June) and my fridge (which I don’t want to deal with finding a place for this summer. I’m now contemplating selling the desktop I buillt for Winter Term as soon as I can get it working again.

Okay, so if you know me, at this point you’re probably going, “WTF? Why is Jonas talking about selling a computer? Especially one he keeps telling me is so awesome?” A fair question. Basically, I was in a very different place when I built it than I am now- although to be fair, the same could be said of now and last month. If I can get $750 or so for it, I can buy a Macbook this summer and give my Powerbook to my parents. Net result: a laptop in every lap as far as my family is concerned, one less net possession for me, and my main computer will combine the best aspects of my two current ones- black and running a speedy Core 2 Duo processor from the desktop, and being a Mac from the Powerbook. Between an iPhone and a spec’d out Macbook (and maybe, just maybe a Linux-modded Nintendo DS), I will have my computing needs more than covered.

Still haven’t decided for sure about that, but if I did sell it before going home, storage would suddenly become a lot simpler.

This quote actually points up a pretty interesting phenomenon. I follow a number of Mac developers and visual designers via RSS and Twitter, and they are very heavily Obama-slanted (and liberal-slanted generally). There also seems to be at least some correlation between Windows/Internet Explorer 6 use and conservatism (or at least ability to be distracted by details like flag pins on a politician’s lapel or the lack thereof).

Oberlin’s been in the news a couple times recently, so I thought I’d write a short roundup for folks who are offcampus or otherwise out of the loop:

First, an NPR associate did a segment on the… shall we say… somewhat negative student reaction to the Fearless campaign. They even include a photo of two Oberlin students in some of my shirts.

Second, Sam Feldman and Grey Castro got mentioned in a CNN story about co-ed living in college dorms. Grey is unfortunately misspelled, but it’s a cool mention of what makes Oberlin Oberlin nonetheless.

Always nice to see news articles about things that are actually important :-P.

Today I had the privilege and unexpected pleasure of running into a woman who was in my first year seminar, but who has since transferred to another school. She was back on a visit to see campus and a number of her friends. I’m not really one of those, but happily our paths crossed and we wound up walking and talking for a little bit.

When I first met Catharine Yager, I would never have used the word woman for her; mind you, neither would I have called myself a man. We were first years, which means people who aren’t really confident in themselves yet. In Catharine, this manifested as a certain awkwardness and a habit of spontaneously singing or dancing in a self-conscious manner- rather endearing behaviors. I always wished I had gotten to know her better, but we didn’t see each other too often outside of class, and where she was a confirmed member of the Oberlin Christian Fellowship, I was just getting involved in the Oberlin Pagan Awareness Network.

I hadn’t seen her around for some time, but last I knew she was going to study abroad, so I suppose I’d just been assuming she was still abroad. Turns out she’s been back, but transferred to the west coast, for some time now. I feel silly not knowing that, but in my defense, well, she wasn’t here.

Anyway, I suppose I should get to the main point of the post. Tonight I ran into her on her visit back, and we wound up talking for probably less than five minutes total. In that time, though, I realized I had an entirely new image of Catharine. She is now a beautiful young woman, confident in herself and trusting in God to put her where she needs to be- very impressive qualities. While the time I spent talking to her made me very certain that she’s a fellow Seeker (something I’ll explain in a later post), and thus sad that I won’t have the opportunity to talk to her much in person, I’m very happy that she’s somewhere that’s right for her.

Ω
